Make ISPs, wireless carriers pay for broadcasting rights
Internet service providers and wireless carriers should be forced to pay fees to support Canadian artists just like traditional broadcasters, since they make money off internet radio, Canada's broadcast regulator has been told.
"They are benefiting from the privilege of being able to broadcast to Canadians, but unlike traditional broadcasters, they currently have no obligations commensurate to that benefit," Sherry Kerr, vice-president and general counsel for the satellite radio company Sirius Canada Inc. Friday told a hearing in Gatineau, Que.
The hearing is one of a series being held by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to determine whether broadcasting over the internet should be subject to federal regulations.
Kerr argued that internet radio is a direct competitor and a serious threat to satellite radio, especially now that it is becoming increasingly available on portable wireless devices and even some devices that can be built into the dashboard of a car.
"This view is supported by an increasing number of articles in the press opining that internet radio is a category killer and the category that it would kill would be ours," she said.
That would be bad for Canadian artists, as satellite radio broadcasters are required by the CRTC to offer significant support for Canadian artists by ensuring a certain percentage of their content is Canadian - specifically supporting emerging artists and contributing money to a fund to support Canadian artists.
Other broadcasters have similar obligations, which also indirectly force them to exclude certain non-Canadian content, Kerr said.
At the same time, wireless and ISPs now have revenues in the billions per year, some of that driven by audio broadcasting, and some are increasingly behaving like broadcasters.
For example, Kerr said, Bell Mobility provides a service that gives customers access to 60 internet radio stations for $8 a month.
Kerr said one way to level the playing field would be requiring ISPs to geoblock - make unavailable to Canadians - audio content that doesn't comply with Canadian content requirements.
That move would thrill satellite radio companies, Kerr added.
"We would actually throw a party for you. Nothing else would level the playing field for us from a regulatory perspective," she said. "However, we recognize that this approach flies in face of the principles of openness and freedom of choice that governs the internet."
She suggested that an alternative would be to require wireless carriers and ISPs to pay a levy proportional to their revenues related to broadcasting.
That wouldn't completely level the playing field, as broadcasters are still bound by Canadian content rules that internet radio is not, Kerr said. Because of that, she said, new media should pay a higher levy while the levy should be lowered for her own company.
She acknowledged that some people would be opposed to the new fee and consider it a tax that could boost internet fees for wireless and broadband internet customers, and discourage them from buying those services.
However, she said, given that people are willing to pay much higher fees for faster internet and the fact that it is becoming a necessity, it's unlikely the levy would cost the companies customers.
"Customers are highly unlikely to cancel their service because they're paying an extra dollar a month," she said.

Not Without A Fight
Wow - did i ever get a surprise today! Honestly, i've been following these guys since their self-titled 2nd release, and i've been a fan since! But, i had no idea that they were releasing a new CD. I'm so far behind the times you'd think. Nevertheless - they ARE on the podcast, so, what better way to celebrate so to speak than to offer my review of their new CD!
March 10, 2009. That is the date the "Cult following" will have marked on their calanders. Why? This is when New Found Glory's new CD - and, seventh studio album of new material - Not Without A Fight - will be released. Now, if NFG hasn't...turned your crank yet...maybe this will. The guy behind +44 and Blink -182 - among others - actually produced this Album! That's right! Mark Hoppus!
That might explain why this album is probably going to be the band's most influential CD to date. This CD returns them to how they used to sound. Edgy, in your face Pop-Punk. If Coming Home tore this band's career up - this is the saving grace. Right from the very first track, it sets the tone for the record, and it does NOT let up in any way, shape or form. And, what's even more weird is there's not 1 single depressing song on this album. Well...not for me, anyway. The lyrics however have NFG writen all over them.
For me, the first highlight of this album is the first single, "Listen To Your Friends" - it's amazing! I should have listened to my friends...yea, i wonder how many of us guys (Or chicks), can actually say this about someone. Listening to the beat behind it, it really sounds a lot like "Sincerely, Me" mixed with a bit of "Dressed To Kill". I found myself headbanging to this song when i first heard it...and, you know why it was released as a single from the first riff.
"I'll Never Love Again" is really the anthem for us people who seem to fall head over feet, but, don't have any expectations. "You don't have to settle for me at all/I'll never be the one you want/I'll never ever be the one under your arms/and I don't have the face to turn heads" Once again, another song i can heavily relate to. Honestly...a song you should play while you're getting turned down. Good reason to carry an iPod with ya!
If i had to complain about the CD - which all good critics must do...are just 2 songs. "Heartless At Best" and "This Isn't You" - they're not catchy! The lyrics are awesome...but, it just doesn't sound like NFG. It doesn't fit them. However, they're not crappy....they're just sub-par that could've been a bit better...or, at least polished up a little bit more. However, the sound of both songs do fit the CD well, and compliment it.
Despite the 2 "Crappy" songs - this CD got a 5 star rating in iTunes from me. It's nice to see that NFG are back - and, better than that "Tip Of The Iceberg" EP they released last year. And, those people that said "Coming Home" destroyed them in 1 form couldn't be further from the truth! Those critics will flip and do the 180 when they hear this CD for themselves...and understand why NFG rules the Pop-Punk scene! I love how they...returned...to their old sound, and catchy lyrics with edge. Takes me back to 2000.
Wow...did i just turn from 25 to 52 there all of a sudden? lol.

An Illusion Against Death
"An Illusion Against Death" is the second full-length from Winnipeg's, The Paperbacks. Produced by long-time fan and supporter, Weakerthans frontman, John K. Samson, the new disc is released on the new Winnipeg label, Parliment Of Trees.
Illusion sees the band continue it's lyrical exploration of hitherto uncharted territory: the layered heartache of taking one's mentally ill sister to visit a dying parent ("Institutions"), the willfully veiled language of medicine and romance ("Things Get Abstract"), the limits that bureaucracy and institutional inertia put on emotional response ("Holocaust Art") The lyrical weight does not, however, offset the tunefulness, allowing the album to vigorously showcase the band's various strengths.
The Paperbacks formed in 2001, and have remained active, touring Canada and Europe, releasing a previous full-length Album ("An Episode Of Sparrows" 2003), as well as a split CD with K Records' Wolf Colonel (Jason Anderson) as part of Endearing Records' "Intercontinental Pop Exchange" (2004) series.
Following the release of "An Illusion Against Death" in July 2007, The Paperbacks toured throughout Canada through the summer of 2008, before putting the finishing touches on a brand new double album set for release this winter!

2009 Juno Fever is HERE!
It's hard to believe it's that time of the year again in Canada. Juno buzz is in the air, and just in time for the ceremony on March 29! On tap this year, Russell Peters will be hosting it. For those of you who haven't got the chance to see any of Russell's stuff, he's an awesome Canadian comedian! Mostly known for his "Somebody's gonna get a hurt real bad" routine. HAHA...i can so hear it in my head!
Among the performers this year include Nickelback, City And Colour, Simple Plan and the always Jubilent, always stunning and amazing, Sarah McLachlan. And, about this time of year, it's not just the performers who stand out - it's the nominees as well! And, this year is not a disappointment! There are a ton of categories, and, i could go on and on in this blog post about them, and what my predictions and choices would be. I'll save that for another entry later on!
What i do want to focus on right now is the 2009 Juno Fan Choice award - presented by Pepsi this year. Just like every year, you - the fans - have a chance to be heard, and to make your voice heard! And, not just that - but, also have an opportunity to present the award at the ceremony this year! How sweet is that!?!? That's right...this year, Pepsi is giving 5 trips away to the 2009 Juno awards being held in Vancouver! All you have to do is point your mouse, click, and vote to enter!
It couldn't be more simple, right? All you have to do is go to this website and enter your email address, and vote! It's that easy!
Make sure you keep it locked in to Toxic TuneZ all March long for Juno-Mania! Everything you could ever want to know about this years ceremony will be here. My predictions, who should win...and, more in depth looks at some of the new talent that have been nominated!

New Music for the Week of February 23, 2009
I so can't believe it's Monday already! Seems like i'm a day behind in everything. Ahhh....the joys of coming over a cold i tell ya! Oh boy, could i rant about that!
..........
Ya know what? I think before i go into the list of achievements i've done today alone, i will rant about being sick! Cause, how often do we dig into my personal life on here? Not often. Gotta connect some way or the other...and, test if my stupid feedburner thing is working, or if i have to replace it all together lol.
Well, it all began on Tuesday last week (Which would make that the 17th) My bro, this chick he was trying to hook up with, our other friend, Santana, who we've known since...God...a long damn time, i'll put it that way. When ya can't remember how long it's been, ya know it's been a long time. And, then of course me. Oh yea, and i forgot to mention that this chick my brother was trying to get with has a sister...and, she was also down here. With her boyfriend.
But, to begin the night, it was just me and Brittany (the chick my bro was trying to get with) - so, we decided we didn't wanna get bored waiting for everyone to show up, so we started playin' drinkin' games...and....blazing some stuff up oO Brittany's sis gets here with her boyfriend, and so does Santana. And...so does my bro about an hour later. Yea...way to go bro! lol.
So, i'm half boozed up, and the other half is...smoked up...when outta nowhere, brittany says "oh yea, i forgot to mention, i'm sick"
GREAT!!! LOVELY!!! Just what i need!! another cold!
i didn't think too much of it at the time, cause i'm looped, we're all having fun. We're trying to get drunk and high....all while playing burnout on the 360 and listening to music. Gotta say though that i got Brit hooked on some of the podcast music (Elise Estrada comes to mind...and, a few rock bands like Default, nickelback, Theory of a deadman)
So, that wasn't it though. Tuesday we drank. Thursday we drank. Thursday kinda sucked though, cause i just had to open my big fat mouth, and stick my foot so far down there, i'm surprised i was able to locate it and pull it out. Well...more like, leave it there to pass out with. So, i don't think we'll be seeing Brittany again for awhile. It's a damn shame too, cause she seems like a really nice person - i wanna at least pay her back for the booze i drank off her those 2 days....so, she should come down tomorrow or tuesday...and, then i'll pay her back with MORE BOOZE! Damn right!
So, i've been walking around with a flu for the better part of a week....and, it's almost gone. It's still in my throat, and my sinuses - but, i'll live. I was poppin' the NyQuil back like it was Eggnog lol. That stuff rocks! The only thing that really tastes like it's shown....green lol. Green Fuckin' Death. Everything Denis Leary and Lewis black say about it is true!
Then to top it off i had to babysit for 2 hours lastnight. Not bad, seeing as how the kid never woke up once. I prob'ly jinxed them too. I was all like "Yea, you watch....i'll leave, and he'll wake up and won't be able to sleep" - she hasn't told me if that's what happened yet...so, i doubt it. But, i got $10 for a pack of smokes...all good! :D
.................
Now, on to the new music that has been added to the podcast this week! There might be a repeat in here or 2, because i don't know if i've thrown 'em in with the mix yet...but, yea. Also, i do wanna point out that i removed some bands and artists that aren't really "Fitting" with my music style. I'm trying to stay in the pop/rock/rap elements of things...and, not go far off from there. So, Jazz did get removed (Diana Krall, Matt Dusk and Michael Buble - just to name a few) But, i have added to the collection.
- Dala
- Black Stone Cherry
- Brokencyde (Very Similar to Hollywood Undead meets Lil Wayne)
- The Classic Crime
- David Gray
- Innerpartysystem
- The Lonely Planet (haha...yea, Andy Samberg's band made it to the podcast)
- Prozzäk (Think: Simon and Milo - the cartoon character's..haven't seen them since 2003, which is kind of depressing)
- Semisonic
- Tickle Me Pink
- White Lies

Important news for Bands on TrueAnthem
This is an important announcement regarding bands that i currently have in rotation who promote their music with TrueAnthem. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE this service, and what it offers bands and fans alike. However, how they distribute the MP3's they carry...is what i have an issue with. My podcast is one of many that don't "Self promote" with the music they play. And, as most of us know, trueAnthem has a "nice" way of inserting promo spots into the first few seconds of each song. All well and good in some ways - not well and good in the podcast world.
Currently, these are the bands and/or artists that i have in my rotation who are being pulled tonight due to this issue. I'm posting this as a courtesy - and would love to have you guys back on. But, not with trueAnthem MP3's.
- Blue Stahli
- Candy Coated Chaos
- UltraViolet Sound

Comes With Music coming to the US this month
It's been a long wait, but more than a year after Nokia announced its Comes With Music plan--free music downloads built into the price of the phone--the first Comes With Music phone is apparently coming to the U.S. in February.
According to The Nokia Blog, the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music (a.k.a. The Tube) will go on sale at U.S. retailers on Feb. 26 for a suggested price of $399. No carrier partners have been announced, so there's probably little chance of a carrier subsidy reducing the price at launch. CNET reviewed a preview version of the phone back in December and liked it fairly well, but I'm most interested in how the Comes With Music plan will stack up against Apple's iTunes.
According to the information CNET got back in October, when the 5800 was unveiled in the U.K., Comes With Music tracks will be playable on the phone and one PC, and will not expire after the year is up. From the reviews I've seen, it's truly an unlimited downloading service--there's no hidden limit, although Nokia's terms of use would let them cancel your service for "abusive or excessive downloading."
The experience is a little clunkier than iTunes from what I've read in the reviews. The phone comes with a card containing a code; enter that code into the Web-based Nokia Music Store and all prices in the store disappear. Everything has to be sideloaded--there's no direct over-the-air downloading to the phone as you can do with the iPhone--and it's PC only. You can't transfer the songs to any other phone, even another Comes With Music phone, nor can you burn them to a CD without paying extra. Songs are encoded in the Windows Media Audio format (which I've always thought is an excellent audio codec, for all of the other flaws with Microsoft's digital media strategy and products), and of course come with DRM to limit what you can do with them.
Still--everything you download lives on your PC forever. So while $399 is a significant premium over the iPhone, add in the price of a few thousand PC-tethered downloads, and it looks pretty competitive. At the very least, it could be an extremely convenient way to discover music--you can always buy full CD-burnable tracks of the songs you really like, then transfer them to other devices in other formats later on.
Will it make a dent in iPhone sales? Not without a carrier agreement, no.

'Free' can't compete with free
Universal Music first floated the idea of Total Music in 2007 as a way to give customers an alternative to free MP3s available on file-trading networks and anonymous Internet sites.
At that time, the business model called for hardware manufacturers to pay some extra amount--perhaps $5 per month--and optionally pass this cost along to consumers. In return, consumers would get the right to download as much music as they wanted, for free, during a certain time period.
Nokia eventually launched a similar plan, Comes With Music, but Total Music (which became a joint venture between Universal and Sony Music) ran into some antitrust questions and eventually shifted its focus to ad-supported streaming and paid downloads.
Now it's dead, along with Ruckus, a college-specific music download service that Total Music quietly purchased last summer.
Blame the economy if you want, but the real reason for the failure of these services--and every other record industry effort to capitalize on the Internet for distribution--is revealed in two places in this blog post by Total Music's vice president of product management, Jason Herskowitz.
First, he built a mashup service called Friendp3, which takes his friends' Last.fm feeds, searches the Internet for the same song posted somewhere as a free MP3 file, and creates a playable playlist of those songs. On demand. Like the excellent Songerize service--which lets you enter a song name and hear it on demand--it uses the Seeqpod playable search engine on the back end. Very cool.
But the technology's not the point. Did you see what just happened there? There is free music on the Internet! Available with no advertising and no restrictions. That means that any new music service, industry-sponsored or otherwise, is not only competing with iTunes, or Pandora, or Last.fm, or MySpace, or the latest ad-supported-service-of-the-week. It's competing with millions of MP3s uploaded by users and easily findable, thanks to the rapid advances in Internet search technology.
Hold that thought for a second as we come to the end of his blog post:
But wouldn't it be cool if there was a way to do this on a platform that plays nice with everyone? And compensates those that deserve compensation? And somehow can magically cover the costs associated with all of the above (hint: this is the kicker)?
Yes! Yes, it would be cool! I would like a free pony and no more dental appointments as well. And a mint-condition low-mileage black 1997 Mercedes E Series. With tinted windows.
Not to be too flip, but this sentence gets right to the nut of the problem with industry-sponsored online services. Their primary concern is getting paid and making sure that everybody else in the traditional value chain gets paid. That's a laudable and perfectly understandable goal. But that's how they miss the point, again and again and again. In order to create a service in which everybody gets paid, somebody's going to have to be paying.
The only way you will get customers to pay more than zero when there's so much zero-cost unrestricted content out there is by offering them a compelling benefit they can't get anywhere else. This is why iTunes is successful--it offers customers the easiest way to find and buy new music to load on their iPod.
What did Ruckus offer? DRM-encrusted downloads that couldn't be transferred to a Zune, much less an iPod. What did Total Music offer? We don't know because it never launched, but I'm willing to bet it didn't have a clear and compelling customer benefit.
I don't know what the magic formula is. Forget advertising--the ads are so ignorable, and CPMs so low on these kinds of services, that they'll never cover the cost of the content, and users will absolutely reject more intrusive advertising like an audio ad every 10 songs. (Remember: you're competing with free.) So you have to get users to pay.
What are they willing to pay for? A bigger back catalog? Some sort of online storage locker for downloads, which would then let you play them from any Internet-connected device? The ability to share songs with a friend in a seamless electronic way--the equivalent of playing the record you just bought for them, only, you know, with computers and Internets and stuff?
The sad thing is that many of these things have been tried, and industry players have done everything in their power to stymie them with lawsuits (the original MP3.com, file-sharing networks), copyright fees (the battle over online radio), and unreasonable DRM restrictions (take the original Zune's "three plays, three days" restriction on device-to-device sharing, which killed what could have been an interesting feature). But perhaps it's not too late to try again.

Canadian content available online may be regulated
OTTAWA — Rosalyn Lemi has been working as a caregiver in Ottawa for four years now, but she can keep up with news and her favourite TV shows from home for as little as $12 a month.
Like millions of Filipino ex-pats around the world, Lemi accesses shows from the Philippines' major network, ABS-CBN, over the Internet.
"I watch everything," says the 28-year-old, who tunes into news, entertainment shows — "even sports!" — because it's "nice to know all that information and what's going on back home. It makes you feel like you're in the Philippines."
Going the online route is a no-brainer not only for Lemi, but for the foreign broadcaster as well. Getting ABS-CBN's shows into the Canadian homes would have been near-impossible going the traditional broadcasting route.
As the company's chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III recently told the Wall Street Journal, "we had been trying to get into the Canada market for 15 years, but the cable operators there said we must have Canadian content and use Canadian satellites."
By broadcasting over the Internet, ABS-CBN has been able to bypass all those pesky regulations — like paying for and broadcasting Canadian content. That's because the federal regulator has given broadcasting over the Internet a free pass for almost a decade.
But that may change at what could be watershed regulatory hearings over whether broadcasting over the Internet should — or even can — be regulated.
At issue, according to some, is the very future of Canadian content available on the Internet. Since 1999, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has exempted programming broadcast over the Internet from the same regulations that apply to conventional broadcasters, which include everything from licences, to the percentage of Canadian channels and programs aired — and at what hours those shows are on — to foreign ownership restrictions.
Part of the reason for this exemption was that the regulator believed "the effect of new media on television audience size would be limited, at least until such time as high-quality video programming could be distributed on the Internet."
That time is upon us.
Not only can viewers go online to see shows from foreign networks like ABS-CBN, they can also access major U.S. shows right here in Canada — usually for free.
Miss last week's episode of Gossip Girls? No problem. Go to CTV's website, and watch a high-quality live-streaming version of it — including a 15-second commercial for Dove's "Go Fresh" body wash — on your computer.
While most of the evidence is still anecdotal, it's clear that watching shows over the Internet is growing in popularity.
Earlier this month, for example, Glenn Britt, chief executive of Time Warner Cable Inc., told financial analysts that "we are starting to see the beginning of cord cutting. People will choose not to buy subscription video if they can get the same stuff for free." And considering the next generation of televisions will include USB ports for easy Internet connection, the draw of watching programming over the Internet can only increase.
"I think the future is more and more in front of a computer screen, with what is effectively on-demand access to programming and content," says Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa who specializes in the Internet.
Which brings us to this week's hearings.
Although the CRTC will consider a wide range of questions regarding the regulations of professional, private broadcasting online — user-generated video of the type that appears on YouTube is exempted, and the publicly funded CBC is a special case — few believe the federal regulator will try to apply the same rules in this new media that it would in traditional broadcasting.
For one thing, it's near impossible. The CRTC can hardly require licences from everyone broadcasting over the Internet. And, short of becoming a quasi-totalitarian state, there's not much the regulator can do to stop songs, videos and movies from around the world coming into millions of Canadian homes.
The bigger question is how to promote — some would say, protect — Canadian content in an area in which federal regulators can't control the delivery of programming.
That's why much of the hearings will concentrate on whether there should be additional funding of Canadian programming for the Internet and other new media, like wireless devices.
There's some indication that the CRTC is at least open to the possibility. In a 2006 report on the "future environment" of Canadian broadcasting, the regulator determined that "public policy action" would be needed in three to seven years.
Indeed, one of the CRTC's reasons for a review of its current exemption is recent evidence that "Canadian content on the Internet was insufficiently available."
And a report commissioned by the CRTC on the role of government in overseeing the new media, especially as it relates to television programming, recommends financial support for Canadian programming online. Broadcasting over new media should be "largely unregulated, with a mechanism for public financial support for the production and distribution of content," says the report, called TV or Not TV: Three Screens, One Regulation? written by renowned Columbia University professor Eli Noam. He suggests, among other things, charging Internet service providers, largely cable and telephone companies, a fee to help fund Canadian productions. Cable companies already pay five per cent of their gross revenues into a Canadian content fund.
Not surprisingly, those working on the creative side of television programming couldn't agree more.
The Directors' Guild of Canada is "deeply concerned with Canada's flagging competitiveness in the new media broadcasting environment," and counsels the CRTC to "pay particular attention to the creation of high-quality, high-cost, scripted Canadian broadcasting content in the new media."
The Writers' Guild of Canada warns that the Canadian new media sector "risks being overwhelmed by the U.S. new media sector if it is not encouraged."
The guild, which represents about 2,000 screenwriters, says not only should Internet service providers contribute to "the creation of professionally produced Canadian content online," but that the CRTC should provide "incentives" to encourage broadcasters to promote and feature Canadian programming online.
"It is insufficient to merely fund Canadian new media programming: Canadians must also be able to find it."
Broadcasters and cable companies — again, to no one's surprise — oppose any form of regulation.
Cable companies argue it would be illegal to make the Internet service arms of their companies pay for content — and they have official legal opinions that say so.
"We're a dumb pipe," says Ken Engelhart, senior vice-president of regulatory for Rogers Corp. "We don't know what you're downloading . . . so how can we be responsible for the content?"
ISPs also argue that consumers will bear the brunt of any levy imposed upon them. So while governments around the world are trying to find ways to make broadband more affordable for citizens, Canada would be making it more expensive, their argument goes.
And anyway, what's the problem? According to cable and broadcasting companies, there's plenty of popular Canadian content on the web.
On the other hand, goes another side of their argument, there's almost no high-end programming being developed anywhere exclusively for the web. Instead, broadcasters both here and south of the border repurpose programming from their traditional broadcasting companies for online, offering "web-exclusive" extras like bloopers, alternative endings and director interviews.
Why should the CRTC charge them for programming that doesn't yet exist?
Technology moves ahead rapidly, and the emergence of Internet-exclusive, high-quality shows is just around the corner.
Canadian private broadcasters, who last year spent $615 million on Canadian programming, may be motivated simply by the Internet's business model to be aggressive in creating their own content, says Geist.
He points out that Canadian broadcasters license the Internet right for foreign shows — like CTV does with Gossip Girls. But there may be a time, he says, when foreign broadcasters will want those rights for themselves. At that time, owning their own content will be more important than ever for broadcasters. By that time though, it'll be too late if the Canadian production industry doesn't start developing content for new media now, say proponents of regulation.
Whether it'll get a helping hand from CRTC regulations is what these hearings will determine.

Often these turn out to be grossly exaggerated. Or, as in cases like the ones below, completely fucking retardedClick Here to read the full article on Cracked.com

150 songs for sobbing on Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is almost here, and as everyone from your bubbe to your Facebook status won't stop reminding you: You are alone. All alone.
Profound sadness is not for the faint of heart. And sometimes the best place to be is right in the middle of it.

No OZZFEST This Year
Ozzy Osbourne is currently in the studio in Los Angeles co-producing his tenth studio album with Kevin Churko. The new CD is the rock and roll legend's follow-up to 2007's "Black Rain" which debuted in the Top Ten on the album charts in 11 countries and spawned Ozzy's first-ever #1 Active Rock track "I Don't Wanna Stop" (which also sat atop the Heritage Rock chart for more than 20 weeks). The two-time Grammy Award winner has decided that he will not be touring until he has a new album in stores (currently projected to be Thanksgiving 2009). Thus, Ozzy has decided to put his namesake festival Ozzfest on hold this year.
When MTV News caught up with the Osbournes at the Scream Awards in Los Angeles on October 18, 2008, they discussed their plans for Ozzfest's 14th year. Asked if 2009's festival would be free once again like it was in 2007, Ozzfest co-producer Sharon Osbourne replied, "No, don't you know that there's a depression on? Are you mad? We're going back to what we originally were. We've given the real good fans a free show for one time, and now, it's back to business as usual."
Video footage of the Osbournes talking to MTV News about Ozzfest can be viewed below.
The one-day Ozzfest 2008 festival, with METALLICA and OZZY OSBOURNE as headliners, was among the highest-grossing concert standa in the world last year, according to Billboard magazine. The AEG Live-promoted Ozzfest 2008 grossed nearly $3.5 million and almost 30,000 fans got to experience a 13-hour show filled with legends, cutting-edge acts and Ozzfest alumni who ignited three stages at Pizza Hut Park in the hard music-loving state of Texas, including one devoted to the state's bands.
The official Ozzfest web site was updated with a photo gallery from last year's event, which was held on August 9 in Frisco, Texas. Check it out at this location.
A three-minute preview of "Osbournes: Reloaded", a new Fox variety series starring Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon, and their children Jack and Kelly, can be viewed below. Among the highlights shown are a blindfolded contestant fooled into making out with a grandmother, Ozzy serving at a fast food drive-through window, and the clan heading out into the country to meet other families with the name Osbourne. The series is scheduled to air this spring, although an exact premiere date has yet to be announced. Six installments have been taped so far.
"Osbournes: Reloaded" marks the Osbourne family's return to television following the phenomenal success of their MTV reality series, "The Osbournes".

Andy Samberg's Incredibad New Album
haha....i found this online today, using flock (Which, if you guys aren't aware, is prob'ly the BEST browser is available for "Social Browsing!) So, not only am i staying on top of shit i like to keep tabs on....Digg comes in quite handy!
Anyways, remember that Andy Samberg song with Justin Timberlake? (C'mon...don't try to tell me that you don't remember!) Well - before i start rambling on about it - this is where the story came from: http://mtblog.vanityfair.com/online/culture/2009/02/11/qa-andy-samberg.html
Also, on that page - Eric Spitznagel, he's got an awesome interview with Samberg, and it's really awesome!
It can be difficult to remember anymore, but there was a time when the words “dick” and “box” weren’t so closely associated. Andy Samberg changed that forever (thanks to an assist from Justin Timberlake) with the digital short “Dick in a Box,” a parody of R&B ballads that first aired on Saturday Night Live—where Samberg is also a cast member—in late 2006. It went on to win an Emmy and log a record-setting 35-million-plus views on YouTube and other Internet sites. “Dick in a Box” has become as recognizable and hummable as Steve Martin’s “King Tut” was in the late 70s. Not too shabby for a song about male genitals.
“Dick in a Box” is just the tip (pardon the pun) of Samberg’s comedy empire. Over the last several years, Samberg and his cohorts—Saturday Night Live writers Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who go by the collective moniker the Lonely Island—have been churning out songs and videos like a Motown hit factory, except for comedy. There’s been “Lazy Sunday,” a gangsta rap about Magnolia cupcakes and The Chronicles of Narnia; “Natalie Raps,” wherein Natalie Portman promises to sleep with your boyfriend and “kill your fucking dog for fun,” among other threats; and “Iran So Far,” in which Samberg confesses his man-lust for the butter-pecan thighs and hairy butt of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
It was only a matter of time before Samberg and his pals made an album. Incredibad, the Lonely Island’s debut (available this week), features old favorites and a bevy of new material, including songs with such promising titles as “Punch you in the Jeans” and “I’m on a Boat”. They’ve even assembled an all-star lineup of guest vocalists, including T-Pain, Norah Jones, Jack Black, and the Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas.
It remains to be seen whether Samberg’s legion of fans will pay for what they’ve been getting for free on TV and the ‘Net. But if nothing else, you can be reasonably certain that by the time you read this, Incredibad’s first single—“Jizz in My Pants”—will have been played and replayed a few million times, everywhere from office cubicles to dorm rooms, and whether you want to or not, you’ll probably know all the lyrics just by osmosis.

Shallow Life Release Date Announced!
LACUNA COIL’s much anticipated new album, "Shallow Life“, will be released on the following dates:
Europe: April 20th, 2009
North America: April 21st, 2009
“Shallow Life” was produced by Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte) at NRG Studios L.A. where renowned artists such as Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, The Used, Slayer, Papa Roach, Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte, and many, many more worked on some of their landmark albums.
LACUNA COIL comment on “Shallow Life” as follows:
Cristina Scabbia:
"’Shallow Life’ is a natural metamorphosis from within the band; we explored different musical territories while maintaining our own style. A mix of old and new, fast and slow... light and dark.
The album production is incredibly powerful and has a beautiful purity to it. Hopefully listeners will feel the same sort of connection that we have to these songs. It would be great to think that we have produced songs that will make anybody either think, smile or cry.
‘Shallow Life’ has forced us to challenge ourselves. It represents the way we see ourselves in the days we live in through truth, love and lies.”
Andrea Ferro:
"’Shallow Life’ is just a mirror of what you see out there, it's something you should first see inside of you. It's a new cycle of songs and it's more clearly ourselves."
The release of the album will be supported by the Music As A Weapon IV Tour (http://www.musicasaweapon4.com) which is going to be THE major North American tour for the 1st half of 2009. The four bands performing on the mainstage are Disturbed, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira and LACUNA COIL. Still, this is set out to be more than just a tour, because there will be a tattoo and music festival with a 2nd stage and additional bands playing as well as an extreme sports exhibition including Freestyle and Half Pipe from top action sports stars. Some of the world's major league tattoo artists will be joined by some of the top local ones in each individual market.
However, LACUNA COIL’s European fans will just need to wait a tiny little longer before the band will play several major European festivals which will be announced shortly.

Elise Estrada: Self-Titled CD Review
In September of 2008 however, she released her self-titled debut on with RockStar Media Corp. And, has had success since. It's no wonder why after listening to the CD. From her body banging beats to heart breaking ballads - she proves she's here to stay, and is a top competor.
The album opens up with "UnLove You" - a sort of soulful ballad mixed with an upbeat...beat...mixed with deep lyrics. There a LOT of "Un" words in this song. "Unfair", "Unreal", "Unjust" - but, it all makes for a song with some meaning. I have a tendency to not get song lyrics...so, i'm not even gonna try to do this justice. That's not what i'm here for. But, her voice just shines in this song, and, although the song isn't that "Bangin'" yet - it does set the tone for the record. This was her third single, and the first of 2008 for her - and, it only topped 11? Geeze!
"Insatiable", track 2 from the album, and her very first single. Another surprise that it only topped #44 on the Canadian charts. I remember when i worked at the bar i did, that this was was played. Overplayed actually. But, it still is really awesome! It's got a good beat, and her voice still shines through on this track. It's one of those songs that can instantly get stuck in your head and stay there for a really long time. Way to go for making this her first single in 2007, and then making us wait for the album! lol. But, the first 2 tracks are awesome - and, shows that Elise can do soulful, and....dance-y. (I know that isn't a word, but, let's pretend...ok? :)
Ok, track 3, "One Last Time" kind of reminds me of that song Ne-Yo did..."So Sick" - it's got the same beat and everything by the sounds of it...just new lyrics, and Elise's angelic voice. Once you get into the song though...it's not a clone of the song. Just the start of it. Another song that i can read, but...can't find the words to explain it - so, i'll let the lyrics do it for me. "but I just cant make you love me/and it burns my heart/that you don't feel the flame/no I just cant make you love me/so hold me like you mean it/and i'll pretend you feel it/one last time"
One more in order, then, we're gonna skip ahead - cause, honestly....how many times can a bad reviewer say the same thing? Don't answer that....
Track 4 - "Poison"....wow...another awesome power-pop dance number. And, her first Single release of 2009! I'm anxious to see how this plays on the charts in Canada once i get through playing it! Especially since all my shows are archived. This is one of the songs that i can actually put into words - so, let's try that now, shall we? "My heart is racing/My skin is burning up/Hands are shaking/But still can't get enough" Lust. It's kind of like...first glance, and that's what ya go through when ya lock eyes. Lust...prob'ly not the best choice in words...haha. Oh well! Ohhh...i just heard panting! Wow...now, if THAT doesn't give it away - i dunno what will. But...this is an awesome song that (Does best voice here) Pump...YOU UP! lol. Close my eyes, and i can see the drummer in the background...and, is it wrong that i can see the video for this song? Maybe it's cause i'm a guy with a totally demented brain. But, that's neither here, nor there!
Track 6, "Just Want You" - another power-pop song. It's got that whole kind of 80s feel to it for some reason - maybe it's just me...maybe it's just cause it's 1am. Whatever it is, it's good. First time in awhile that i've even heard something like "I don't want your Doe-Rae-Me" stuff in a song. But, i feel a kind of...tension....and...desire in this song as well. The added touch of a guy doing a rap after the 3rd verse...i think...is a nice touch as well. Sure, it takes the focus off Elise for a minute or so...but, yeaaaa.
Finally - track 10, "Ix-Nay" ...i really don't know how to classify this song other than...different. But, in a good way. It's got an awesome beat to this. It's one of those songs that you can totally sing to, and has a catchy hook to it as well. When i first heard this song, it was...weird to say the least. Not often do ya hear a song start off with "I don't mean to be the kitty in the middle". Those of you who think Elise isn't different from other pop acts...that 1 line just sums up that you're WRONG! And, how often do ya hear the word "Onomatopoeia" in a song either. Ya know...that's actually a good way to describe this song - "the use of imitative and naturally suggestive words for rhetorical effect"
Yea...so much for getting back to "the way i used to review" oO
I can't say this any better though. The CD is awesome! The only thing i have to say is that the flow for this album seems to be....distant. It goes Slow Song, Dance number...soulful song...power-pop beat..and that's it. It coulda been flowed a little better. So, yea, it's a good CD to put on shuffle mode, as you won't be breaking the "Flow" for the album. However, it does showcase the talent she has. An angelic voice, meaningful songs and deep lyrics. She's not just one of those chicks that some labels have been known to "mass produce". She's her own, and she showcases it.
This CD is definately a buy it for me! But, hey! Judge for yourself below! Listen to the samples, and then go buy it if you like her. She's an awesome contender up there with Nelly Furtado...and, they're both gonna have long careers.

Update on everything new
Hey guys! Just a quick update before my bro gets here! I promised a few days ago about the review, the new episodes...etc. Those will be posted tonight - so, don't fret! I have been working on the Elise Estrada review for a few days now. I only want it to be Perfect as, i wanna return to the days when my CD reviews actually meant something.
As for the new episode - that will also be up tonight before midnight. I'm working hard on a "perfect" playlist (I'm beginning to use that word way too often oO)
Lastly - i'm thinking about adding a Meebo chat room! I figure that it's about time i jumped on this whole web 2.0 thing - hence why there's a digsby widget now. Yes, for all of you people who want to contact me, even for the smallest thing - can now do so without having to sign up for anything! It's just as simple as putting your text in the "Chat bubble", and hitting enter! I've always got Digsby running...for the most part - but, i'm not always "online". If i don't answer, don't take it personal! I'll still get the message!
And, about the chat room. When i do post it...it'll prob'ly be dead for a short period of time. Nobody's fooling me - i know who all you people are that don't wanna talk to me! lol. But, the more people that know about it, the less chance of it being dead, Right? My whole point is USE IT!!!
Anyways...the next post ya see from me will be in about an hour or 2...and, that'll be the review! So, stay tuned...and, don't forget to sign up for updates to the feed on the right...as well as taking the short survey! Geeze, i took down the paypal thing - so, that's the least ya can do for me :P

I'm not dead yet
February already - man, that's hard to believe! i almost can't believe it that we're now 2 months into the year. I know it's been a little over 2 weeks since my last post...and, that as of lately, my posts seem to be few and far behind! That's not how i want it...but, things have been hectic here to say the least. However, my attention is back - and, hope to have it fully restored to the podcast for the next few months.
First off - i know i promised a review on Elise Estrada's CD - and, that WILL be posted tonight! No more promises on that front. Also, a few new releases from KillBeat Music arrived the other day, and i promise to have a write-up on a few of those as well. That's also coming tonight. The next thing on my list of things to do is to do a new episode of the podcast. I hope to have this done on Wednesday, possibly Thursday.
The last thing that i have to do is get around to the bands and solo artists who have been adding me on MySpace...what seems to be non-stop. I promise to get to each and every one of you in time, and hope to have all of you contacted about Airplay by the end of the week...maybe extending into Saturday.
That being said - there will also be a new episode up on Saturday night as well. Both shows will feature music recently added in the last post. God...i just realized that i still have to do an episode showcasing Crystal Sunshine's newer CD as well - i promised her that before the new year, and it seems like shit seems to get in the way. I'm good for that! oO
To fill ya guys in on what's been going down the past few weeks, and why i haven't really been around. Before the adds to the podcast, i was dealing with shit from my dad. Just about his drinking and all that crap. Seems to have come forefront again today....but, we'll see. Then, last week was my friend Tara's friends' last couple of days here. So, on Friday, we went out to the Corona and "Lived it up". Paid for it on Saturday though! And, the funny thing is, that i know all about what went down that night....but....i so don't remember walking home with any of them back to her place lol. That was the only blank in the night.
And, to top things off - i've been going to a lot of movies....and, watching a lot of them at home too. Mostly older ones when i stay home...but, the past couple of movie's that i've gone too have been really good! Well, sorta. I was able to see "Taken" a couple of weeks ago...and, will now have the opourtunity to go see "Slumdog Millionaire" sometime before it goes out of theatres. Those are just the ones that get the mention! Most of the old movies though have been action flicks - or, those chick flicks. Yeaaaa.
That's been my last couple of weeks though. It's been good! But, i am back, and all ready to go again. So, other than the reviews i promised...and, the write-up's of a few CDs, as well as all the stuff mentioned before i rambled on...will be up and ready to go before the weekend. As well...there will be a review of the "underground before nominated" film, Slumdog Millionaire posted after i go see it!
Guess ya can say "Not just Canadian stuff" anymore oO
